An officer of the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) based at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) was apprehended on Friday night for reportedly demanding a bribe.

The unnamed KRA customs official was arrested by officers from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) and taken to the Integrity Centre Police Station for processing.

In a statement on Saturday, EACC said the officer demanded Sh35,000 from a consignee who had gone to the airport to fetch a laptop that had been sent to him by his kin in the US.

The recipient had been needed to pay Sh100,974 in tax to KRA for the computer but the said official undervalued the package to pave the way for him to pay only Sh12,000.

It was at this point that the woman was apprehended by EACC officers while receiving the demanded bribe and she is expected to be charged on Monday with aiding in tax evasion.

She was held at the Kilimani Police Station overnight and released on cash bail on Saturday as detectives continued with their investigation into the alleged bribery and tax evasion.
