The Kenya Meteorological Department has warned that various parts of Kenya will experience strong winds and heavy rainfall this weekend starting from Friday. 

According to Met, the rainfall will be more than 24 mm in 24 hours will land on parts of Central, Western, South Eastern and North Eastern sections of the country on Friday and Saturday.

Siaya, Kisumu, Migori, Homa Bay, Kisii, Nyamira, Bomet, Narok, Kericho, Kiambu, Nyandarua, Nyeri, Murang’a, Meru, Embu, Kirinyaga, Tharaka Nithi, Kitui, Machakos, Makueni, Tana river, Garissa, Wajir, Isiolo, Samburu, Marsabit and Turkana are the counties set to receive heavy rainfall.

Met has warned residents of areas in the 27 counties to be on the lookout for potential flooding and heavy winds that might sweep away their houses and livelihoods.

“Flood waters may appear in places where it has not rained heavily especially downstream. Residents are advised to avoid driving through, or walking in moving water or open fields and not to shelter under trees and near grilled windows to minimize exposure to lightning strikes,” reads a notice from Met.

Strong easterly to south-easterly winds experienced over north-western region are expected to fortify to more than 15 meters per second (30 knots) and northerly winds of more than 12.9 meters per second (25 knots) are expected over eastern parts of Kenya from Friday.

Kenya Meteorological Department has asked those living in the high-risk areas to remain vigilant as the strong winds may blow off their roofs, uproot trees and damage structures.
