Police arrested 26 people on Saturday night in a swoop that covered five entertainment spots in Nairobi’s Kilimani area on Saturday night.

The raid was conducted by police working together with officials from the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) following complaints by residents of the surroundings who complained about noise pollution and other forms of inconvenience caused by revellers at those joints.

One such resident complained about loud music from the establishments that operate within residential areas, inconveniencing their families and denying them a good night's sleep.

“My children can't sleep, I was here two days and I told them, there are specific county by-laws on how you convert a residential property into a commercial building and how then you convert that into a pub,” he said.

Another resident also complained about loud music and obstruction by patron’s cars that are usually parked on the road stretching the time of his drive home.

This also comes after Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai vowed to ensure all entertainment joints in residential areas within Kileleshwa are shut down.

He petitioned the Liquor Licensing Board to crack down on 15 entertainment spots in Kileleshwa over claims of being a nuisance, noise pollutants, and drug trafficking areas, among other vices.

Police arrested fifteen people, including a manager and other employees at Oyster Bar and seized 20 pots of shisha, which the Ministry of Health banned in 2017.

Other entertainment joints that the police raided during the crackdown include Bar Next Door, Club 909, Kettle Bar and Onex Bar, from where eleven people were arrested and 15 pots of shisa were also seized.

The culprits who were arrested were taken to the Central Police Station in Nairobi from where they awaited to be arraigned in court on Monday.
