A suspected hoodlum shot dead a police officer and wounded two others following a serious gun battle in Kisumu County.

The incident happened at Pap Onditi in Nyakach on Friday morning.

According to the police report, the incident happened when a contingent of police officers acting on a tipoff from members of the public ambushed the suspect at the apartment he lives in Pap Onditi centre.

The suspect went on a wanton shooting spree when he realised the police were upon him, from the vantage point of his house, which was on the second floor of the building.

A fiercer gunfight ensued and, the suspect shot a chief police inspector’s left hand and also shot a corporal who took a bullet to his chest and right thigh.

The suspect also shot dead the deceased police officer before fleeing the scene on a getaway motorbike albeit with gunshot wounds.

The two wounded officers were rushed to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital where they were admitted for specialised treatment and are now in stable conditions.

Crime Scene Investigators from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) processed the scene of the crime and the deceased’s body was moved to the Star Hospital Mortuary.

Police have launched a multi-agency manhunt in the area for the suspect who is believed to be behind the recent spate of crime that has bedevilled the residents of Kisumu County, Homa Bay County and Migori County.
