The death toll from the Monday evening, Homa Bay accident that involved a petrol tanker and a 14-seater PSV at Got Kokech/Ngengu trading centre, along the Homa Bay-Kendu Bay road has risen to 10.

This follows the death of two more victims of the accident who succumbed to their injuries while receiving treatment at the Homa Bay County Referral Hospital.

Homa Bay County Police Commander Samson Ole Kinne confirmed their death.

The preliminary investigation reports have identified the accident’s cause as over-speeding and reckless overtaking manoeuvres.

According to Kinne, the driver of the ill-fated vehicle was overtaking another 14-seater matatu at that section of the road, which is a bend therefore not being able to notice the petrol tanker.

Eight people perished on the spot including a Standard 7 pupil at Janeiro Junior Academy and a Form 3 student from Kobala Mixed Secondary School.
