Three Mombasa residents have filed a petition seeking to have the Interior Ministry declare Monday a public holiday as Mombasa and Kakamega Counties will hold their elections after they were postponed.

Through their lawyer Willis Oluga, the three namely Kevin Nzuki, Moses Aran and Thani Mohamed submitted that the court should allow residents of the counties affected to exercise their right to vote because Monday is a working day.

They opined it would be discriminatory to Mombasa and Kakamega residents if Monday is not declared a public holiday.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) announced the Mombasa and Kakamega gubernatorial election would be held on Monday.

Six other areas where elections were postponed, including Kacheliba, Kitui Rural, Pokot South and Rongai constituencies while Kwa Njenga Ward in Embakasi South, Nairobi County and Nyaki West Ward in North Imenti, Meru County will also hold their election.

The elections in those areas were postponed after a mix-up of ballot papers was discovered ahead of the previous election.
