The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has appealed to the National Police Service to speed up the probe into the mystery that culminated in the murder of Embakasi East Returning Officer Daniel Mbolu Musyoka.

IEBC Vice Chairperson Juliana Cherera, together with three other commissioners, issued a statement dated August 19, 2022, condemning the incident and offering their condolences to the bereft.

"We condemn in all strongest forms all crimes committed against our employees in the performance of their duties," the four said.

The four commissioners urged the security agencies to bring Musyoka’s murderers swiftly to book.

"We urge the state security institutions to swiftly expedite investigations into Mr. Musyoka's death and bring to justice the perpetrators of this unspeakable and heinous crime," the statement partly read.

One fact to note is the statement only had the signatures of four commissioners appended but not the commission’s chairperson Wafula Chebukati’s signature, exposing a rift in the IEBC.

The four commissioners questioned the bizarre manner in which two IEBC officials have lost their lives mysteriously in the statement that mentioned the death of former IEBC IT manager Chris Msando who was also killed days before the 2017 general election.

They emphasised that IEBC officials should be able to carry out their mandates without fear.

Chebukati announced Musyoka went missing on Tuesday at 9:45 am at the East African School of Aviation, where the tallying process of the presidential election results from the Embakasi East constituency was ongoing after he excused himself for a phone call.

A group of herders discovered Musyoka’s body early Monday in Kilombero forest at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro days later, an area that has earned a reputation as a dumping site for murder victims.
