Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairman Wafula Chebukati officially gazetted William Ruto as President-elect after declaring him victor on Monday.

In the gazette notice dated August 16, 2022, Chebukati also gazetted Ruto’s running mate Rigathi Gachagua as the Deputy President-Elect following the August 9 General Election.

“In exercise of the powers conferred by Articles 88 (4), 136, 138 (4) and (10) and 148 (3) of the Constitution of Kenya, section 4 of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission Act, 2011, section 39 (1), (1C) and (1H) of the Elections Act, 2011, Regulation 87 (3) and (8) of the Elections (General) Regulations, 2012, the Chairperson of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission declares that: (a) In respect to Article 136 (1) of the Constitution: Ruto William Samoei (b) and in respect to 148 (3) of the Constitution: Gachagua Rigathi, have been duly elected as the President and Deputy President, respectively, of the Republic of Kenya having complied with the provisions of Article 138 (4) of the Constitution, during the General Election held on Tuesday, 9th August, 2022,” reads the gazette notice.

Chebukati declared Ruto, the UDA Party presidential candidate, the President-Elect saying he had attained the 50 per cent plus one constitutional threshold to avert a runoff poll.

According to Chebukati, Ruto bagged 7,176,141 votes representing 50.49 per cent of total votes cast to beat Azimio La Umoja’s Raila Odinga who got 6,942,930 votes or 48.85 per cent.

The IEBC boss said on Monday that Ruto bagged more than 25 per cent of votes cast in 39 counties, against the constitutional requirement of 25 per cent in at least 24 counties.

He also revealed that Raila had attained 25 per cent of the total votes cast in 34 counties.


President-Elect William Ruto and Deputy President-Elect Rigathi Gachagua are expected to be sworn in on August 30 if their win is not challenged.

This comes as Raila on Tuesday vowed to challenge the declaration of Ruto’s victory at the Supreme Court terming it a nullity and accusing Chabukati of tampering with the results.
