Juliana Cherera has been trending for the better part of Monday and Tuesday after she led a walkout on IEBC chairperson Wafula Chebukati before he announced presidential results.

Juliana Whonge Cherera is the current IEBC Vice Chairperson and she led commissioners Justus Nyang’aya, Francis Wanderi and Irene Masit in disowning the results released by Chebukati in an acrimonious session at Bomas of Kenya on Monday.

She later on Tuesday accused her boss Chebukati of conducting the final tallies in the backend of Bomas to their exclusion, terming the final presidential tallying process opaque.

But who is Juliana Cherera? Here are six things you probably did not know about her:

1. She was sworn in at the at the Supreme Court by Chief Justice Martha Koome on September 2, 2021 alongside Irene Masit, Justus Nyang’aya and Francis Wanderi.

2. The four were appointed to fill posts left by Roselyn Akombe, Paul Kurgat, Margaret Mwachanya and Connie Maina, who resigned after the 2017 General Election.

3. She was elected the IEBC Vice-Chairperson unanimously on September 14, 2021 during a meeting held at the boardroom of the electoral agency.

4. Her work entails facilitating commissioners to execute their duties at the commission at all times while serving as the deputy to IEBC Chairperson Wafula Chebukati.

5. During interviews for the position done in July 2021, she told panelists she would prioritise participation and inclusion of everyone, especially minority groups, in Kenyan elections.

6. She holds a Master of Education in Leadership and Educational Management from the Kenya Methodist University (KEMU), a Bachelor of Education (Arts) Degree from Kenyatta University, studied Project Management at Kenya Institute of Management and undertook a Senior Management Course (SMC) at Kenya School of Government.

7. She launched her career as a teacher and has an experience of more than 18 years in the sectors of Education and Management.

8. She last worked as the Chief Officer in the Mombasa County Government at the Strategic Delivery Unit under the outgoing Governor Ali Hassan Joho administration.

9. She was a member of the Mombasa County Emergency Household Relief and Nutrition Support Project Coordination Committees as well as the Secretary to the Mombasa County Economic Recovery and Legacy Strategy.

10. She is a member of the Kenya Devolution Support Program committee and chairs the Voter Education, Partnerships and Stakeholders Engagement Committee.
