Interior PS Karanja Kibicho has said elections are not won through coercion or fear-mongering but through persuasion.

He was speaking on Sunday when he officially opened the Kiandegwa Police Post in Mwea Sub-county, Kirinyaga.

Kibicho was reacting to information the authorities have in their hands regarding threats being issued by a section of people to some members of the public through leaflets to vote for particular politicians.

He issued the statement via his social media as he appealed to leaders to ask politely for votes as opposed to issuing threats.

“Elections are won through persuasion. NOT coercion or fearmongering. To our dismay, we're aware of leaflets warnings the electorate of dire consequences should they fail to vote for certain candidates on August 9,” Kibicho said.

The PS said a multi-agency team is following credible leads to the authors and distributors of the leaflets and soon they will be brought to book.

“A multi-agency security team is pursuing the authors and distributors of the leaflets for a swift and deserved date with the justice system,” Kibicho said.

However, Kibicho did not disclose the areas where the leaflets were distributed.
