Interior PS Karanja Kibicho has dismissed claims by a section of leaders that the government is using administration to rig the August election.

Kibicho said during a meeting with National Government Administrative Officers in the Murang’a University of Technology on Tuesday that some Kenya Kwanza Alliance leaders are not amused by the Interior officer’s meetings alleging they are meant to influence the election results.

The PS said the administrators’ work is to maintain peace and serve Kenyans and not buy ID cards from residents as alleged by Kenya Kwanza politicians.

“It’s ridiculous for one to think the government is buying IDs through chiefs. For what purpose? Let politicians campaign and sell their manifestos without tainting the names of chiefs and their assistants,” Kibicho said.

The PS said the allegation was pointless and signified that the Kenya Kwanza team may have smelled defeat in the forthcoming election and termed them as wild.

He emphasised officers from the Interior Ministry usually hold security meetings regularly even before the electioneering period.

“We have been meeting chiefs and other members of NGAO [National Government Administrative Officers]. To wake up and start telling us we are buying IDs is just pointless, and maybe you have sensed early defeat,” Kibicho said.

He asked the security officials to remain vigilant and prevent any incidents that may cause chaos during the electioneering period or even after the elections.

Kibicho said a civic education is ongoing to inform voters to elect leaders without integrity issues and some individuals are getting jittery yet no names have been mentioned.

“We are also doing civic education to inform people to elect leaders of integrity. When we advise our people not to elect corrupt leaders, some people are becoming angry, yet we did not mention anyone’s name,” Kibicho said.

Kibicho also defended President Uhuru Kenyatta against his critics who are opposed to the formation of the assumption committee saying it is constitutional and was there in 2013 and 2017 to ensure the transition of governance according to the law.
