Chaos erupted during a Kenya Kwanza Alliance rally in Meru on Wednesday, which was attended by the outfit's presidential running mate Rigathi Gachagua.

Two opposing groups of rowdy youth went at each other after meeting at Gachagua’s political gathering and exchanged stones, forcing Gachagua to end his rally in Igembe North prematurely.

The police were forced to lob tear gas into the feuding crowd to disperse irate grown.

The Mathira MP was whisked away and evacuated from the scene at Mutuati in a chopper before getting caught in the crossfire.

Also whisked away to safety were Meru Senator Mithika Lintiru and South Imenti MP Kathuri Murungi who were also in attendance.

What caused the clash between the two groups is yet to be established. However, reports point a finger at local politics.

Gachagua took to his social media account to condemn the incident and castigate the masterminds, saying they are primitive.

"Any person who thinks of using our unemployed youths to cause violence is primitive and will be ashamed by the resounding Kenya Kwanza victory in the next 24 days," Gachagua said.

This is yet another instance where a political event has turned chaotic for Gachagua, forcing him to end his speech.
