Azimio La Umoja One Kenya presidential running mate Martha Karua was forced to cut short her rally prematurely following a teargas explosion on the podium in Kisii on Thursday.

Karua, who was in the company of Ida Odinga, wife of Azimio presidential candidate Raila Odinga, alongside other women leaders present at the rally, was whisked away to safety.

She had just taken to the podium to address the rally at Gusii Stadium when the teargas canister exploded forcing everyone to scamper for safety ending the anticipated rally.

Karua was rushed off podium and into her car without addressing the huge crowd of Azimio supporters who scampered after gathering at the venue for hours waiting for her arrival.

In a tweet moments later, Karua confirmed that she was safe and was moving on to the next scheduled campaign venue undeterred by the scary turn of events at Gusii Stadium.

“Heading to Masimba to complete my eventful day in Kisii county,” Karua posted.

She added, “Safe and busy campaigning.”

Earlier, Karua accompanied Mama Ida to the launch of the Kisii Gender-Based Violence Center that will support survivors to access treatment, justice and get back on their feet.
