The price of maize flour is expected to come down slightly after the government suspended the levies on imported maize.

On Tuesday, the Agriculture CS Peter Munya announced the government will issue the directive to suspend the levies on Thursday.

According to local maize millers, this will in effect reduce the price of maize flour slightly by Sh2.

The United Grain Millers Association (UGMA) through it's chairperson Ken Nyaga said the move is so insignificant and the government needs to intervene in the supply of maize for significant reduction of the cost of flour to be realised.

"The move is so insignificant we need a serious government intervention on making the maize available to reduce significantly on the cost of flour," Nyaga said.

Nyaga also said only if the government talks with other maize importing countries to scrap export permit levi will the price of maize will come down and also the price of flour.

"If we can have direct government talk to scrap export permit levy, then the price of maize will come down and this will impact on the cost of the final product," Nyaga added.

Currently, a 1 kilogram packet of maize flour retails at about Sh100 and if the levy relief is suspended as the government intends, the same packet will retail at Sh99.
