Kenyans will groan at the filling stations as there has been a monumental Sh9 hike in the retail prices of fuel at the pumps.

This comes with the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) release of the maximum retail prices of petroleum products, which will be in force from Tuesday to July 14, 2022.

In the period under review, the pump prices of Super Petrol, Diesel and Kerosene increased by Sh9.00 per litre respectively. The prices are inclusive of the 8 per cent Value Added Tax (VAT) in line with the provisions of the Finance Act 2018, the Tax Laws (Amendment) Act 2020 and the revised rates for excise duty adjusted for inflation as per Legal Notice No. 194 of 2020.

The average landed cost of imported Super Petrol increased by 5.96 per cent from US$826.77 per cubic metre in April 2022 to US$876.05 per cubic metre in May 2022; Diesel increased by 10.90 per cent from US$899.36 per cubic metre to US$997.35 per cubic metre while Kerosene decreased by 0.34 per cent from US$908.66 per cubic metre to US$905.60 per cubic metre.

The applicable pump prices for this cycle for Super Petrol, Diesel and Kerosene have been increased by Kshs. 9.00 per litre from the immediate previous cycle. The Government will utilise the Petroleum Development Levy (PDL) to cushion consumers from the otherwise high prices.

The Free On board (FOB) price of Murban crude oil lifted in May 2022 was posted at US$ 112.48 per barrel an increase of 19.67 per cent from US$ 93.99 per barrel in April 2022.

Over the same period, the mean monthly US Dollar to Kenya Shilling exchange rate depreciated by 0.99 per cent from Sh115.74 per US$ in April 2022 to Sh116.89 per USS in May 2022.

The fuel price hike comes after a previous hike and a fuel shortage that saw Kenyans suffer long queues in search of fuel.

In the latest EPRA review made on Tuesday, Nairobi residents will buy Super Petrol at Sh159.12 per litre, Diesel at Sh140.00 per litre and Kerosene at Sh127.94 per litre.

Mombasa residents will buy Super Petrol at Sh156.86 per litre, Diesel will retail at Sh137.76 while Kerosene will retail at Sh125.69.

Fuel pump prices for Super Petrol will retail at Sh159.53, Diesel will retail at Sh140.70 and Kerosene will retail Sh128.66 in Kisumu.
