The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has dealt the Umoja Summit Party leader Walter Mong’are alias Nyambane an enormous blow after nullifying his clearance certificate.

The National Returning Officer for the presidential election Wafula Chebukati cited the lack of academic qualifications as the reason for nullifying Mong’are’s clearance.

IEBC had earlier given Mong’are the green light to run for the presidency in the August election and he was the first presidential aspirant to be cleared by the commission on Monday last week.

“As the Returning Officer for the Presidential Election, upon discovery of new information on Walter Onchong'a Mong'are's lack of academic qualifications,” Chebukati said.

Chebukati invited Mong’are to the Bomas of Kenya at 2:00 pm for clarification, but Mong’are did not turn up and therefore, leaving him with no choice but to revoke his nomination certificate.


“I invited him to appear before me today at 2.00 pm to clarify the issue. He failed to honour my invitation and pursuant to Regulation 43 (2) (c) of the Elections (General) Regulations, 2012, I hereby revoke the nomination certificate of Walter Onchong'a Mong'are of Umoja Summit Party dated 2nd June 2022,” Chebukati said.

Mong’are is the only presidential aspirant to have his clearance certificate revoked, leaving only 4 presidential candidates in the race for State House.
