The Kenya Prisons Service has experienced the sad loss of Prisons Staff Training College Ruiru, Senior Assistant Commissioner General of Prisons (SACGP) Wanini Kireri.


According to the official statement by the Commissioner-General of Prisons John Warioba, Kireri passed away on Tuesday afternoon at the AAR Hospital Along Kiambu Road in Nairobi.

“It is with deep sorrow that the Kenya Prisons Service wishes to inform the general public of the unfortunate demise of the Commandant, Prisons Staff Training College Ruiru, SACGP Wanini Kireri, EBS,” the statement read.

“The late Wanini Kireri passed on at the AAR Hospital along Kiambu Road today at noon while with her family members.”

Kireri had served in the Kenya Prisons Service from 1982 when she was enlisted as a cadet officer. 

Kenya Prisons Service boss has remembered her as a gallant, dedicated, selfless and committed officer whose illustrious career saw her serve in the service in various capacities.

Warioba also conveyed his condolences to Kireri’s family and the Kenya Prisons fraternity.


“On my own behalf and on behalf of the Kenya Prisons Service, I wish to convey my heartfelt condolences to the family and the Kenya Prisons fraternity as I join them at this moment of grief,” Warioba wrote.

Kireri featured in a weekly series that bagged a prestigious international award named Kenya Women Series, which was published by Swala Nyeti.

Several major reforms in the Kenya Prisons are attributed to the late Kireri.

Kireri was a professional counsellor and an author of a book titled The Disruptor, which describes her journey through the Kenya Prisons Service.


She pioneered the open-door polity under the stewardship of the then Vice President Moody Awori, which opened up prisons to the outside contact.

Kireri also championed for the provision of formal education to the inmates supported by well-wishers who provided stationery.


She introduced the remote parenting program that allows families, especially children, of the inmates to visit the prisons and spend a day with their loved ones.

As a recreational activity, Kireri introduced the beauty pageant for prisoners.
