The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has flagged some irregular activities in its electronic register involving voter transfer.

IEBC’s CEO Marjan Hussein wrote an internal memo on Wednesday to the county election managers, senior election officers and also copied the commission’s chairman Wafula Chebukati revealing the concerns of the commission in the review of the parliamentary register which showed voter transfers without required statutory forms.

The CEO directed the election officers to give priority to the matter and reverse all the transfers that are not supported by any documents immediately.

Chebukati said stern action will be taken against any officer who is involved in the illegal transfer of votes even though he did not disclose which regions were affected.

“Transfers happen when a voter requests and there is a form to fill which then the registration officer has to update the register if there are unauthorised cases where one finds themselves in a place they don’t want the commission investigates. Cases of transfers without one's knowledge shall be investigated and the commission has called for all transfer forms if there are such cases they will be returned back and if an officer was involved in the illegal transfer stern action will be taken, the commission will not tolerate that,” Chebukati said.

He encouraged voters to confirm their details during the ongoing verification exercise and report any anomalies.

“We opened up the voter register for verification from 4th May to 2nd June,” Chebukati said.

“We call upon Kenyans to be verified electronically, SMS platform and also an online platform.”
