The High Court has barred the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) from clearing Paul Karungo Wa Thang’wa to run for the Kiambu senatorial seat in the August election.


This comes after one voter named Kelvin Njui Wangari filed a petition seeking to bar IEBC from clearing Thang’wa to contest in the election.

Wangari challenged Thang’wa’s eligibility to contest after he was impeached from office in October 2019 when he was the Kiambu county government Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports for gross misconduct.

Justice Anthony Mrima issued a ruling barring the electoral body from clearing Thang’wa to vie as a candidate for any elective post in the forthcoming election.

“Pending further orders of the expanded Bench, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission is hereby prohibited from clearing the 1st Respondent herein, Paul Karungo Thang'wa to vie as a candidate for any elective office at the 9th August 2022 general elections and/or printing ballot papers bearing his name and/or symbol,” Mrima ruled

Mrima further referred the matter to Chief Justice Martha Koome to make a determination on the matter alongside other related matters by the expanded Bench of the High Court.

"This matter is hereby referred to the Hon. Chief Justice to be dealt with alongside the other related matters by the expanded Bench of the High Court," Mrima said.


IEBC and the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission were the other respondents in the case.

Thang’wa was contesting for Kiambu senatorial seat on a UDA party ticket.
