Kenya Kwanza Alliance presidential flag-bearer William Ruto has trivialised the selection of Martha Karua as Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition Raila Odinga’s running mate ahead of the August elections.

Ruto was speaking in Embu during the Embu Economic Forum held in Embu County on Friday.

The deputy president jived that Raila picked Karua as his running mate as a matter of confusion in trying to ape their Kenya Kwanza Alliance’s plan to lift 'mama mboga', (colloquial for SME trader).

“When they heard we are planning for ‘mama mboga’ and everyone starting from the bottom coming up, the riddles fellow (Raila) rushed to pick one woman and made her his running mate because of being confused,” Ruto said.

Ruto’s remarks come days after Raila unveiled Karua as his running mate on Monday in a colourful ceremony held at the Kenyatta International Conventional Centre (KICC).

A day earlier, Ruto picked Mathira MP Rigathi Gachagua as his running mate.
