Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition postponed the naming exercise of Raila Odinga’s running mate to Monday.

Raila's Presidential Campaign Secretariat spokesperson Makau Mutua made the announcement.

Makau said Azimio was cognisant of the anxiety the delay of the announcement that was expected to be made on Sunday has caused.

"Our campaign is aware that Kenyans are anxious to know the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Presidential ticket. We will make the announcement tomorrow," Mutua said.

The announcement by Azimio came only hours after the Kenya Kwanza Alliance named Mathira MP Rigathi Gachagua as Deputy President William Ruto’s running mate ahead of the August election.

On Thursday, the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition Running Mate Selection Panel submitted the names of the 3 candidates it shortlisted for the position of Raila’s running mate.

The seven-member panel that comprised eminent persons drawn from various religious faiths and political parties interviewed candidates for the position on Monday and Tuesday at the Serena Hotel in Nairobi.

The panel drew the final 3 names from a list of 11 shortlisted candidates whose names were proposed by their respective political parties to fill in the position of Raila’s running mate.

Azimio will have to name Raila’s running mate ahead of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Monday deadline.
