Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua has ditched the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition party and joined Deputy President William Ruto-led Kenya Kwanza Alliance.


Mutua announced his exit from the Azimio coalition on Monday morning when he issued a statement about the same.

"To this end, we have decided to break our ties with Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Alliance Party. Azimio have violated the latter and spirit of the agreement we went into. Therefore, the contract within Azimio and Maendeleo Chap Chap is an unconscionable contract, one that is unfair, and one whose intent is to finish our party and our aspirations," Mutua said.

The Maendeleo Chap Chap revealed his party signed an agreement with the Kenya Kwanza Alliance on Sunday night.

Mutua praised Ruto and referred to him as a good man who will change the country.

"Deputy President William Ruto is a good man and he will change this country. Last night we signed an agreement with Kenya Kwanza and here is a copy," Mutua said.


Mutua further accused Azimio of deceit and mentioned zoning as one of the areas the coalition was not open about as he revealed the agreement MCC had with Ruto included a zero zoning clause.

"All our aspirants will be on the ballot. We also agreed on the role we'll play when Kenya Kwanza wins and vice versa,” Mutua said.

He also disclosed that other political parties within the Azimio coalition are preparing for their exit from the coalition because of exclusivity but did not divulge the details.

"I am aware that another 5 parties in Azimio are planning to exit the party due to its behaviour of exclusivity and zoning," he said.


Mutua had moved to court to seek removal from Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition.

He filed an application at the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal at the Milimani Law Courts, claiming the Registrar of Political Parties listed MCC without procedural compliance.


The MCC party further complained it was not privy to the contents of the coalition agreement and moved to court seeking orders to vacate the April 14, 2022, gazette notice in which it was listed as being a member of the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition party.

"Unlike Azimio, here is a document we signed and we know its content," Mutua said.
