The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has warned parties that will not comply with the two-thirds gender principle will not be allowed to take part in the 2022 general election.

This is according to a press release IEBC issued on Thursday updating the public on the general election preparedness.

The commission observed that forty 48 political parties that submitted lists of nominated candidates for Members of the Senate, and 38 political parties that submitted lists of nominated candidates for Members of the National Assembly were compliant and met the two-thirds gender principle.

“Upon review of the lists of nominated candidates, the Commission observed that Forty Eight (48) political parties that submitted lists of nominated candidates for Members of Senate, and Thirty Eighty (38) political parties that submitted lists of nominated candidates for Members of National Assembly were compliant and met the two thirds gender principle,” the statement read.

IEBC called upon all political parties that have not yet complied with the two-thirds gender rule to submit a revised list not later than Monday noon otherwise they will not participate in the 2022 general election.

“Therefore, the Commission calls on political parties that have not complied with the said court order on two-thirds gender principle to submit revised lists not later than Monday 9th May 2022 at 11:59 pm,” the commission said

“Non-compliant political parties will not participate in the 2022 General Election for the said elective positions.”

IEBC also alerted members of the public that the verification of the voter register is ongoing and advised how they can confirm if their details are correctly captured.

"The Public is further informed that the Verification of Register of Voters exercise commenced yesterday 4" May, 2022 for a period of 30 days. Kenyans can also confirm their details via SMS by sending their ID/Passport number to 70000 or visit the Commission website portal https://verify.iebc.or.ke. In the event your details are incorrectly captured, visit your registration center," IEBC said.
