Politicians interested in the position of Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition presidential candidate Raila Odinga’s running mate have 24 hours to apply for the position.

This is according to the panel that was tasked with the responsibility of identifying who will deputise Raila in the August general election that met its inaugural meeting on Wednesday.

The committee that the former Kwanza Member of Parliament Noah Wekesa will chair asked the 26 constituent parties in the Azimio formation to forward the names of their choices to the panel for consideration.

"The Committee requests any constituent party members of the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Alliance that wishes to nominate any person for consideration as a candidate for the position of Deputy President of the coalition to submit the name of such person by close of business tomorrow, Thursday, April 5, 2022," Wekesa said.

Wekesa further noted it will only pick a running mate from parties within the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition.

"The Committee shall only consider candidates who are members of the constituent party members of the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Alliance," Wekesa said.

Far from the earlier arrangement that the interested candidates would go through an interview process, the committee seems to have rescinded the decision and clarified only candidates who wish to present themselves before the panel will be allowed to.

The issue of the interview for Raila’s running mate has ruffled feathers, especially from members of the coalition allied to the Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka.

They threatened that if Kalonzo is not named as Raila’s running mate, they will not support Raila’s presidential bid.
