The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has announced that it has 11,000 vacancies to be filled up.

TSC CEO Nancy Macharia made the announcement on Saturday at Mtihani House Nairobi when the 2021 KCSE results were officially released.

According to Macharia, out of the 11,000 positions, 5,000 positions are available for employment, while the remaining 6,000 will be available for individuals who would like internship opportunities.

Macharia also said the imminent recruitment exercise will prioritise sub-county secondary schools because of the number of students they admit.

"During the impending recruitment, we will put more emphasis on staffing sub-county secondary schools, which admit the bulk of learners," Macharia said.

She also said the Treasury Ministry has disbursed Sh2.5 billion for financial 2022/2023, which will be helpful in recruiting more teachers on a permanent and pensionable basis.

She also assured the country that TSC will embark on the teacher recruitment exercise immediately and ensure the new recruits report to work as soon as possible.

“I wish to assure the country that the Commission will immediately embark on the exercise to recruit the teachers to ensure that they report to work as soon as possible, to ease the existing teacher-shortage in schools,” Macharia said.

Macharia also said the government has allocated Sh1.2 million for the recruitment of 6,000 interns.

"The government has allocated the TSC Ksh1.2 billion to recruit 6,000 interns as a stop-gap measure to ease the shortage which stands at 114,581 teachers," she said.

The CEO of the commission added that a training exercise will begin with 6,000 teachers who will be in charge of the upcoming junior high school classes, Grade 7 and Grade under the new Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
