President Uhuru Kenyatta arrived at Parliament buildings on Monday morning to lead Kenyans in public viewing of the body of the country’s third President Mwai Kibaki.

President Kenyatta, who was accompanied by First Lady Mama Margaret Kenyatta, was received outside Parliament Buildings by his deputy-turned-political rival, William Ruto.

However, Uhuru avoided shaking hands with Ruto and his allies who included National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi and his Senate colleague Ken Lusaka, only bowing to them.


At around 7:25am, the body of the late President Kibaki was wheeled to Parliament, where it will lie in state for three days to allow for public viewing until Wednesday April 27.


The procession departed Lee Funeral Home minutes after 7:00am was driven via Valley Road, Kenyatta Avenue, Uhuru Highway before terminated at Parliament Buildings.


Kibaki’s family led by his son Jimmy Kibaki arrived at Parliament before his body arrived.


A host of clergymen arrived at the venue soon after the body did to lead a religious ceremony preceding its removal from the casket ahead of the three-day public viewing.


Former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka, Chief Justice Martha Koome, Inspector-General of Police Hillary Mutyambai, Chief of Defence Forces Robert Kibochi are among leader present.
