The State Department of Correctional Services has issued a statement over a story that was aired on Citizen TV on Monday by news anchor Lulu Hassan entitled ‘Inside the Kamiti Maximum Prison Call Center’.

In the statement by the prisons boss  Brig(Rtd) John Warioba, Kenya Prisons Service set the record straight that the clip that aired on the story was not a recent video and was recorded in 2019.

The Kenya Prisons Service also revealed that the subject of the story David Tett was transferred from Kamiti Maximum Prison to Kamiti Medium Prison on July 22, 2021, before being released on September 9, 2021.

“We wish to further clarify that one David Tett, a former prisoner, who was referred to in the clip aired on 18th April, 2022 as a mastermind of the vice, was transferred from Kamiti Maximum Security Prison to Kamiti Medium Security Prison on 22nd July, 2021 from where he was eventually released on 9th September 2021,” Warioba said.

According to the statement, Kamiti Maximum Security Prison has undertaken serious measures to enhance the security and safety of the inmates, officers and members of the public.

The statement also claims that the Kamiti of today differs from the one that was portrayed in the Monday story.

The service urged the media to present correct facts and should indicate when such video clips were recorded for clarification.

“Much as the Service appreciates the media for educating and informing the public about what is going on especially in our Correctional facilities, we urge that correct facts be presented. If it is a story or clips recorded in the past, like the one which is the subject of this clarification, it should be indicated so,” the statement read in part.

Warioba further assured the public that they are committed to ensuring correctional facilities serve their purpose.

“The department wishes to assure the general public of our commitment to ensuring that correctional facilities live to their purpose of reforming offenders,” the statement read.

The statement comes two days after the expose that highlighted how criminals within the walls of Kamiti Maximum Prison are operating a call centre scamming Kenyans of their millions.
