A man was arrested by police on suspicion of flying a drone above the Lamu Police Post.

Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said on Twitter that police officers who were on duty acted swiftly after siting an object that was flying high above the police post.

“Upon swift action by our officers, it was immediately established that the object was an unmanned aircraft,” DCI said.

DCI SAID an operation to apprehend the person operating the drone was launched immediately and the suspect was arrested.

According to DCI, the man who had been operating the drone alleged to have travelled from Mombasa supposedly to visit his relatives in Lamu and he is being questioned by detectives.

“The suspect is being interrogated to ascertain the veracity of his claims and establish his motive,” DCI added.

The Directorate warned the general public that a police station is a gazetted area hence a high security establishment that no member of the public is permitted to film.

DCI warned any such person found filming or taking part in any activity that is deemed to compromise the security of such an establishment will be dealt with according to the law.

According to the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA), using unmarked aircraft systems popularly known as drones is outlawed based on Legal Notice 76 signed in March 26, 2019.

Any individual found guilty of violating the law banning use of drones for filming risks a jail term of not more than 12 months or a fine not exceeding Sh100,000 or both.

However, the regulation, which is part of the Civil Aviation Act of 2013, excludes unmanned state aircraft and drones which are owned and operated by the government.
