A police officer attached to Deputy President William Ruto’s security detail is reported to have committed suicide for unclear reasons in his house in Juja area of Kiambu County.

Constable Samuel Ngatia, 35, who was attached to the elite presidential escort unit, lost his life after shooting himself in the head on Monday morning as the motive remains unclear.

Police are investigating circumstances leading to the elite officer taking his own life while alone in his house inside the General Service Unit’s Recce squad camp on Kenyatta Road.

Police say that a preliminary investigation revealed that Ngatia used his own pistol to shoot himself in the head with the bullet entering his head from the right and exiting on the left.

Officers combing the scene recovered two spent cartridges, one bullet head, a Jericho pistol with 13 bullets and a Trevor Sub Machine Gun with two magazines loaded with 30 bullets.

The deceased, whose body was later moved to the morgue, left behind two children.

This comes as concerns have been rising over the mental health of officers in the service.
