Police intent on arresting a brewer of the illicit drink chang’aa met resistance from villagers who protected the brewer from being nabbed in Trans-Nzoia County.

The incident took place in Bwake Village on Saturday.

The brewer saw the police officers approaching and raised an alarm, attracting the attention of drunkards and villagers who rallied and attacked the officers.

The officers had stormed into one Mulati’s homestead to arrest his wife who is popular for making the most potent of the illicit brews.

However, when Mulati’s wife realised the officers were upon her, she started throwing tantrums, alerting the entire village and revellers at her chang’aa den of the presence of the police.

As some revellers went about their business unperturbed, the others grouped and took positions to resist the intruding police.

Armed with stones and other projectiles, the villagers who came to rescue their ‘shebeen queen’ launched a stony barrage on the police officers.

According to police who were at the scene, the resistance was a well-coordinated plot that forced the police to fire into the air to scare the crowd that was baying for their blood before they retreated.

Two officers suffered serious injuries during the standoff and were rushed to Kitale Referral Hospital for specialised treatment.

Police say they are currently coordinating a counter operation in response to the incident.
