After a dramatic week, Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua has declared his full support for Azimio La Umoja and its presidential candidate Raila Odinga in the August 9 election.

The Maendeleo Chap Chap party leader made the declaration public on Sunday as he also expressed his interest in becoming Raila’s running mate under the Azimio coalition party.

Dr Mutua spoke after meeting his party's National Governing Council where he indicated that he would present himself for consideration as the coalition’s running mate.

"With the urging of my party members, I present myself for consideration for the position of deputy president to Jakom Raila Odinga," said Dr Mutua.

He had summoned his NGC on Saturday before the Sunday meeting at Convent International Hotel, Lavington, where he finally stated that he will not exit Azimio La Umoja.

Dr Mutua, similarly, said he was confident that Raila will become the 5th president of Kenya saying the former Prime Minister had what it takes to lead the country to prosperity.

"We have unanimously agreed to support the presidency of Raila Odinga and the Azimio umbrella. Truth be told, it is his time. Just like it was Nelson Mandela's time on May 10th, 1994, this August 9, 2022 elections is Raila's time," he said.

He extolled praises on Raila saying he is a leader and a friend, saying the coalition was now focused on winning the General Election come August 9.

"I have a soft spot for Raila. He is a good man full of charisma. Humble man despite his power and influence. He is not just a leader but I consider him as a friend and he looks at me as a friend. He is focused and knows where Kenya is supposed to be."

He assured that the concerns he had resulting in his public tirades last week had already been addresses hence his decision not to quit Azimio La Umoja as he had threatened.

Dr Mutua’s party and seven others in Azimio had lamented that they had been unable to access the Azimio One Kenya alliance document table with the Registrar of Political Parties.

"I wish to confirm that I have at last seen the document that was placed at the Registrar of parties. I have read it and presented it to my team and we are satisfied," he said on Sunday.
