Zimbabwean Head of State President Emmerson Mnangagwa has ordered the country’s Bulawayo city to name a street after President Uhuru Kenyatta.

This order comes less than a month before Uhuru’s state visit to Zimbabwe where he will officially open Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF) in Bulawayo.

July Moyo, the Local Government Minister, asked the Bulawayo City Council to treat the matter with the urgency it deserves.

However, a confidential report of the council indicates that the councillors expressed some concerns about the brief notice issued to the local authority to identify and name the street according to the president’s orders.

They said it is likely to cause legal challenges if the residents are not consulted over the matter.

One councillor named Silas Chigora said Mnangagwa’s order poses the danger of setting a wrong precedent.

He expressed his concern that every president who will ever open officially the ZITF will have a street named after them.

“This is a matter of concern that has to be addressed before it becomes a tradition,” Chigora said.

President Mnangagwa invited his Kenyan counterpart during his state visit to Kenya in March.
