The Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) has revealed that the number of Kenyans registered as members of political parties is more than the number of registered voters.

The number of Kenyans registered as members of political parties has also tripled in a span of 10 years from 7.6 million in 2013 to the current 24 million.

Meanwhile, the number of registered voters stands at 22.15 million, which makes a difference of 1.85 million people less than the number of people registered in political parties.

The steady increase in the number of registered political parties registration is a sign that more people are getting more interested in political parties' activities.

According to the Registrar Of Political Parties Anne Nderitu, the ORPP said it will conduct a verification process of the party membership within 7 days after the party membership registration ended on March 26.

During the verification process, Nderitu said the ORPP will compare the list of the aspirants against the membership register.

“The office will begin the verification process within seven days and submit the verified registrar to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC). We will also subject the list of the aspirants against the membership register and finally issue the certified membership register to the political parties.” Ms Anne Nderitu said.

The new statistics come after political parties had conducted rounds of recruitment exercises for the past 3 months across Kenya.
