The government has launched the nationwide registration of all boda boda operators.

The exercise that kicked off in various parts of the country will see all qualified boda boda operators issued smart riders’ licences.

“We have launched a countrywide registration for all boda boda boda operators leading to the issuance of a Smart Rider's Licence to those who are qualified,” Kibicho said.

According to Principal Secretary Karanja Kibicho, the National Youth Service (NYS) will offer training in motorbike riding as well as registered driving schools.

“The National Youth Service (NYS) will also be offering motorbike riding training, but lessons can also be undertaken at registered driving schools,” the PS said.


Speaking in Kerugoya during the launch of the registration exercise, Kibicho said the registration is for all boda boda operators both licensed and unlicensed.

Kibicho also revealed that the first 200 boda boda operators to register will receive a one-year NHIF cover courtesy of the government which has committed to pay for their monthly contributions.

"The first 200K registrants will benefit from a one-year NHIF cover," Kibicho said.


In Kisumu, the Principle Secretary in the Ministry of ICT Jerome Ochieng launched the registration exercise saying the sector has been ridden with several problems that the government is keen on fixing.

Ocheng' said a streamlined boda bods sector will provide a safe and orderly environment for the public.

“A streamlined boda boda sector will provide a safe and orderly operating environment for the general public who rely on these services for their day-to-day services,” he said.


He also urged all boda bods riders to register in any of the 52 Huduma Centres across the country and take advantage of the 60-days window period the government offered.

“I urge all riders to mobilize and present themselves in large numbers in order to take advantage of the 60 days registration window,” Ochieng' said.


To register, a rider will need to present their original ID, Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) PIN and an active phone number at the nearest Huduma Centre.
