A prison warder at the Kodiaga Maximum Prison committed suicide on Wednesday night while he was on guard duty at the prison’s gate.

According to police report, the unnamed officer was drunk when he shot himself using a G3 rifle while he was on guard duty.

The warder died instantly after shooting himself, following what is believed to be a domestic misunderstanding.

Sources reported that the officer’s wife came to the prison’s gate and demanded money for food from the officer, but he did not give any after saying he did not have any money.

Moments later, the deceased was heard telling his wife to take care of their children and inform his mother that he was about to commit suicide.

An inquest was opened after the Directorate of Criminal Investigations detectives based at Maseno Police Station visited the scene.

The officer's body was later moved to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary.
