The Governor for Kisumu County Prof Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o has been unanimously elected the Vice President of United Cities and Local Governments of Africa (UCLG-Africa) East Africa Regional Caucus.

Nyong’o was elected by 70 delegates from 15 (UCLG-Africa) East Africa Region member states during a caucus that was held at a Nairobi hotel.

The outgoing Vice President Innocent Uwimana endorsed him. Uwimana is also the Chairperson of Rwanda Association of Local Governments Authorities (RALGA).

Uwimana commended Nyong’o saying the governor has what it takes to be the continental body’s vice president.

Nyong’o said that he is optimistic that the success of the summit will open the door to other intermediary cities in future to host the event.

The caucus was held in preparation for the 9th edition of the Africities Summit scheduled from May 17, 2021, to May 21, 2022, in Kisumu.

UCLG-A Eastern Africa Region member states include Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda, Kenya, Uganda, Seychelles, Mauritius, Ethiopia, Somalia, South Sudan, Djibouti, Madagascar, Sudan, Eritrea and Comoros.
