The incident occurred on Saturday night at around 11:30 pm when the building which was under construction caved in and got supported by the neighbouring six-storey building which had occupants.

Some residents of the building and its surroundings said a loud crashing sound woke them up.

“I heard a loud rumbling sound and wondered what it could have been and opened the gate. On coming out, I saw a cloud of dust but still could not see what happened until I moved closer. That is when I ascertained that it was a building that was collapsing. After the incident, all the people living in the other building came out as a safety measure. We stayed with them on the road as some of them started moving out their items from the building and looking for other houses,” a witness said.

The National Construction Authority issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the owner of the collapsing building to demolish it.
