Armed thugs said to number more than eight are reported to have raided the residence of billionaire Manu Chandaria and robbed his family living in the lavish Muthaiga neighbourhood early Monday morning.

Police said the thugs made away with Sh600,000 in cash and jewellery of unknown value during the early morning attack.

Police investigators are still trying to piece together how the armed robbers managed to gain entry into the well-guarded residence and stole from the Muthaiga 52 residence.

According to the police, the robbers managed to disarm the Administration Police (AP) officer managing the gate of his G3 rifle before committing the daring robbery.

Nairobi regional police commander Yakub Rashid said the three guards who were on duty on Sunday night are being questioned.

Officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) are pursuing leads to find out if the robbery was an inside job or a robbery resulting from negligence of the security officers.

The robbery is among many others reported in the affluent neighbourhood that also houses VIPs like Jimmy Wanjigi, former president Mwai Kibaki and Mama Ngina Kenyatta.
