The former Member of Parliament for Mount Elgon John Serut has died.

Serut died on Wednesday morning at the Nairobi Hospital where he was receiving treatment.

His daughter Chemoss Serut shared the news about her father’s demise on Twitter.

“Rest in peace to the love of my life. I hate that you won't see my children. I hate that you won't get to see the woman I become but I'll make you proud. I love you dad ❤️,” Chemosss wrote.

The former legislator was suffering from multiple myeloma, a variety of blood cancer that affects several body organs.

Serut was diagnosed with the disease in January 2020.

Last October, his family appealed for aid to offset Sh20 million medical bill that had accrued.

Serut was Mt. Elgon's Member of Parliament twice. He was first elected to parliament in 1997 and served until 2007.

He also became the Mt. Elgon Member of the National Assembly again from March 10, 2013, to July 16, 2017.

Serut was also appointed Assistant Minister for National Development between the years 2006 and 2007.
