The Teachers Service Commission has extended the duration of maternity and paternity leave for all its employees.

These changes came following a charter agreement of the years 2021 - 2025.

According to the commission’s chair Nancy Macharia, the changes are aimed at improving the education sector.

In the fresh change, female employees are now entitled to a four-month maternity leave while male employees will have a three-week leave.

That is an additional month and a week for the female and male employees respectively because, in the previous arrangement, female employees were only entitled to three months' leave while their male counterparts only got two weeks.

Parents who adopt new children have also been considered in this new agreement and they will get a 45-day leave.

However, all teachers are required to submit their leave requests in good time to allow for the allocation of vacancies in their respective schools.
