Waita quit his role to contest for the Machakos gubernatorial seat in the August general elections.

He resigned at a meeting held at the State House in Nairobi where Uhuru accepted his resignation.

The president thanked Waita for his exemplary service in the portfolio he has held for the past 7 years.

During that period, Waita oversaw the implementation of flagship government projects as head of the President's Delivery Unit in Kenya.

Waita joins the long list of persons who held public offices and resigned to venture into politics with hopes of clinching various elective seats in the August general election.

Waita is seeking to replace Machakos County Governor Alfred Mutua whose term is ending.
