The body of the late Dr Stephen Mogusu is expected to be released to his family after the government cleared his ballooning hospital bill that surpassed Sh1 million.

Kenyatta University Teaching Referral and Research Hospital (KUTRRH) is set to release Dr Mogusu’s body to pave way for burial preparations after the government remitted Sh1.2 million to the facility.

“A clearance letter was issued to the wife in order to proceed and finish processing of burial permit at the farewell home,” read a statement from KUTRRH Credit Control Office.

“The hospital is awaiting the family to pick up their loved one,” added the hospital on Thursday.

Dr Mogusu was based at the Machakos County Isolation Centre, died on Monday following complications linked to Covid-19 after a battle to raise funds to get him proper treatment.

The medic was rushed to the KUTRRH Intensive Care Unit (ICU) after his condition worsened while under the home-based care programme.

The government, through Health CAS Mercy Mwangangi, had pledged support for the wife and children the dead medic left behind but she did not disclose the exact assistance to be offered.

Kenya had lost a total of 32 frontline healthcare workers to the virus with 10 medics succumbing to Coronavirus in just two weeks and doctors union KMPDU had claimed Dr Mogusu died without medical insurance and as his salary delayed for five months.
