Police have arrested the headteacher of Gremon Education Centre in Bamburi over the assault of the 13-year-old grade 6 pupil who was assaulted over chapati.

Nancy Gachewa was arrested by police in Kadzandani, Nyali after a pupil in the school got assaulted by a teacher and other students over chapati dispute.

However, the principal maintains that no teacher was involved in the pupil's attack and he was only beaten up by his fellow pupils.

The pupil sustained serious injuries after he was locked up in a room, given a dog’s beating by the school’s director who got some help from some students.

The reason for the beating was that the boy ate 5 extra chapatis instead of one on January 23, 2022.

The poor lad suffered injuries to his kidneys, his genitals and all over his body, which is covered in lash wounds.

Nyali Deputy Police Boss Ibrahim Dafallah confirmed they have arrested the principal and are still in pursuit of another suspect involved in the incident.

Dafallah also said they have started investigations on the matter and will charge the culprits in court for their crimes.

"We have arrested the principal and are pursuing another suspect. Once we’ve completed investigations, we will charge them in court. We are also waiting for the P3 form," Dafallah said.

The unfortunate student is currently receiving treatment at Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital and according to his father Fredrick Ngure, he has already undergone the first session of dialysis as he awaits further examinations.

“We have just come out of the first session of dialysis and he still needs to be examined further to find out his true condition,” Ngure said.

The Coast regional Education Director Adan Hussein directed the immediate closure of the school, which has both the primary and secondary wings.

Apparently, the school was not registered and had not fulfilled the requirements of the Ministry of Education.

“Its primary and secondary wings are closed until they fulfil the education ministry requirements,” Hussein said.

The Director of Education for Mombasa County Peter Magiri said an independent investigation team from the county department of education has launched investigations into the matter.

The team paid a visit to the institution as well as the boy in the hospital.

"We are aware of the incident that happened to the young man. We have a team of investigators from the county department of education who visited the school and the boy in the hospital," Magiri said.

Magiri said action will be taken against the school should it be found at fault and since assault is a criminal offence, it will be left to the police.
