A Kirinyaga University student plummeted to his death in what is suspected to be a love triangle.

The 20-year-old student died on Tuesday after falling from the third floor of Lantana Apartments in Juja, Kiambu County.

According to the police report, the second-year student identified as Taylon Mbuthia visited his girlfriend Margaret Nyambura, a first-year student at the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) and spent some good time together making merry from Sunday through Monday.

The love birds were in the company of Nyambura’s roommate only identified and Shantel and another male friend identified as Joe Momanyi.

The quartet was later joined by another male individual identified as Brian Andaki who is a fourth-year student at JKUAT.

Apparently, Andaki had gone to pick the same girl Mbuthia had been visiting and having a good time with. Andaki seems to have become curious and inquired who Mbuthia was upon which, Nyambura said he was a cousin who brought greetings from home.

The party went on until late Monday night when hunger pangs came calling, forcing the group of youngsters to go out and fetch some food.

By this time, Shantel was indisposed from taking too much alcohol and could barely lift a foot, so they had to leave her behind to sleep it off.

However, when they got to a nearby joint, it was already closed and that is when they decided to continue partying at another joint.

They partied till 1:00 am when they decided it was enough for the day and staggered back to Nyambura’s apartment.

In a sharp twist of events, an argument between Mbuthia and Andaki ensued as the party scaled the flight of stairs leading to Nyambura’s house.

It seemed that the reality dawned on Andaki that Mbuthia was not Nyambura’s cousin after all. The two are believed to have had a bitter exchange that quickly escalated to a fight at Nyambura’s door shortly before Mbuthia plummeted to his death under mysterious circumstances.

According to the apartment’s caretaker Dan Guchu, a loud thud woke him up from his sleep before rushing outside only to find the lifeless body of Mbuthia sprawled on the ground floor.

Guchu immediately alerted the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) detectives based at Juja.

The detectives rushed to the scene and found the body of Mbuthia bearing multiple fractures with blood oozing out of his mouth and nose.

Nyambura, Andaki and Momanyi were placed in police custody as the prime suspects. Meanwhile, the police launched investigations into the mysterious death of Mbuthia.

Experts from the Homicide Branch have joined the Juja-based detectives in the investigations.
