Wanga took to her social media accounts to share the sad news about the accident.

“Homabay County is in mourning. We have this evening lost nine lives as a truck transporting cane rolled and killed 3 members of the same family at Rodi Kopany,” Wanga wrote.

Wanga condoled with the bereft and prayed for God’s comfort as they dealt with the shock following the loss of their kin.

“My heart goes out to the families that are this evening in shock following the sudden loss of loved ones. May God comfort you in ways that only HE knows,” she said.

The accident raised pertinent questions from members of the public who wanted to know why trucks are still operating beyond the required time.

Here are a few of the comments:

“Condolences to the entire families, trucks should not be allowed to operate at night,” Judy Dicks.

“There shouldn't be these condolence and rip messages any more. These trucks and tractors have killed over half a million people in western and nyanza regions. Nothing has been done so far to curb all these, it seems that sugar is so much valuable than human lives.Nyar Ondiegi Nyasuna can you remember that it's not long when loss one of our ODM strong party woman lady in those homabay areas? I can't remember her name. You leaders should do something about these tinga tinga and truck lorries. This is a voice from siaya,” Joseph Akumu.

“These trucks are a disaster especially at night. They shouldn't be allowed to operate in the dark hours. My condolences,” Wuod Okore.

“These trucks should be given timelines. By 6:00 they should be parked at designated spaces. Any trespass should be fined. Looking a family (mother, father and their child) is devastating and heart wrenching. The pain is incurable and the loss is irredeemable,” Robert Omondi Oswago

“Mheshimiwa , this happens annually, we lose many lives in Ndhiwa ...No truck transporting sugarcane should be allowed to operate beyond 7 pm . The accidents are rampant along Rodi - ndhiwa road . Please discuss this with the county government of Homabay to propose a By- law to that effect or instead influence the national government to treat this with a lot of seriousness it deserves,” Nyakwar Kungu.
