Oginga Odinga’s personal physician and second liberation detainee, Dr Odhiambo Olel is dead.

Olel died in Kisumu on Friday at around 11:30 pm at his home barely a fortnight to his 86th birthday.

According to his family, Olel complained of dizziness and developed breathing complications before collapsing at his Mamboleo home.

"He developed breathing problems at home and was rushed to Kisumu Specialists Hospital," said his son Rayola.

His family quickly mobilised the neighbours who helped rush Olel to Kisumu Specialist Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival of a suspected heart attack.

“We mobilized neighbours and we had to rush the mzee to Kisumu Specialist Hospital, where he died upon arrival at around 11:30 pm,” he said.

They later transferred his body from the hospital to Aga Khan Hospital Mortuary for preservation as his family began preparations for his send-off.

Dr Olel is one of the Kenyans who got detained during the second liberation struggle in Kenya in the 80s.

He was arrested, convicted and sentenced to five years' imprisonment for allegedly being a member of an outlawed society popularly known as ‘Mwakenya’

Olel was a public health consultant who also served as Raila Odinga’s father, former vice president Jaramogi Oginga Odinga’s personal physician.
