Botswana's Vice President Slumber Tsogwane will assume the president’s responsibilities until further notice while the President of Botswana Mokgweetsi Eric Keabetswe Masisi is in isolation.

The President of Botswana Mokgweetsi Eric Keabetswe Masisi is currently in isolation after testing positive for Covid-19.

According to Botswana’s Permanent Secretary for Government Communications John-Thomas Dipowe, the president does not exhibit any symptoms and will continue receiving medical attention.

"The president does not have any symptoms and will continue to receive close medical monitoring by his medical doctors," Dipowe said.

Bostwana has reported a surge in the new coronavirus infections since the detection of the Omicron variant of the virus.

The numbers have risen from under an average of 300 cases in every three days before detection of Omicron to 2,500 for the same period after Omicron detection.

This comes even after Botswana has vaccinated 71 percent of its eligible population of about 1.3 million people.
