The Kisumu bound train encountered a hitch at Nyando escarpments around the Muhoroni area on Tuesday at around 5:00 pm.

The train is reported to have stalled after one coach derailed.

The Muhoroni Deputy Sub-county Police Commander Zaphania Kamuren confirmed the incident.

"It is true one of the wagons derailed and efforts are underway to get it back on track," Kamuren said.

Kamuren said the raised ballast on the railway caused the coach to derail.

However, Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC) said heavy rains that had earlier been witnessed in the area caused the hitch that they termed slight.

“We wish to inform the public that the Kisumu bound train encountered a slight hitch occasioned by the heavy rains that earlier pounded the Muhoroni area,” KRC said.

This was the train’s second trip to the lakeside city of Kisumu after it was re-launched just a few days ago.

Kenya Railway officials moved swiftly to resolve the matter and by the time they issued their statement, the train was already on its way to its destination.

“The issue has since been sorted out and the train is already on the way to Kisumu,” KRC said.
