US President-Elect Joe Biden on Friday announced that his inauguration in January 2021 will be mainly virtual.
Biden said the traditional pomp and colour that have been synonymous with the day will be replaced with an event akin to the Democratic National Convention.
78-year-old Biden is scheduled to be sworn in on January 20.
During a press briefing, the President-Elect told the country and world to prepare for an inauguration unlike any other they have witnessed before.
Biden spoke of a virtual inauguration even as construction of the event stage around the Capitol was ongoing in Washington DC.
The Democrat said not to expect the crowds along the mall, or the masses of politicians and well-wishers crammed into the Capitol’s rooms.
He added that there will be minimal attendance and social distancing rules will be adhered to with no crowds and politicians allowed in the malls and Capitol.
