A suspected terrorist detonated an explosive, killing a couple, himself and injuring a minor on Tuesday evening.

The incident took place at Kanyamloma village in Katito, Nyakach, Kisumu County.

Nyakach OCPD Daniel Chacha, the suspect, blew himself up using an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) and killed the elderly couple alongside him.

Reports say the suspect identified as John Odhiambo Ondiek visited the victims’ homestead and started questioning them about things they knew nothing about.

Ondiek found the couple, Peter Onyango 54, his wife Mary Atieno 40 and their daughter Nancy Aoko 14, sitting outside their house.

He detonated the device shortly after arriving instantly killing himself and Atieno.

Onyango and his daughter Aoko were rushed to Nyakach Sub-county hospital.

Unfortunately, Onyango was pronounced dead on arrival.

Aoko on the other hand was transferred to Katito Hospital in serious condition.

Anti-Terror Police, County Criminal Investigations Officer and bomb disposal unit officers visited the scene of the incident to begin investigations.

According to Counter Terrorism Police (CTP), the suspect is an Al-Shabaab returnee of a local cell which threatens security.

Details also emerged that the suspect was linked to a similar attack at Katito market that happened on December 17, 2020, when the suspect is said to have attempted to kill his girlfriend by detonating another IED.

Luckily, his girlfriend escaped unscathed while Ondiek went under until he resurfaced on Tuesday.

The CTP is appealing to share any information on terrorist activities with the police.
